Brunie January 1963

A makeshift FPO set up in a college in Brunei. I was with 51 Inf Bde PURE, we were the only unit from 51 Bde to go at that time when troubles started and we were attached to 99 Gurkha Bde who didn’t have a postal unit.

OC at the time was Capt Dennis Ford who resigned his commission during the tour and was replaced by Capt Len Calcutt.

Others who were part of the unit and on tour that I can remember were: Sgt Pete Keen (I think), Cpl Jock Watt, LCpl Terry Mellen, Spr Dennis Kitchener Spr Len Massam (Ex Durham Light Infantry), Spr Ray Duckfield (Taffy), Spr Jim Potts, LCpl Taff James (RE driver), & Spr Chalky White (RE driver)

Trouble started in December 1962 but we couldn’t get out until the first week in January as the UK was snowbound and RAF Lynham & RAF Brize Norton were closed down.
